Looking for Car Insurance for Your Teenager

Jan 27, 2012

If your 17 year old son or daughter has decided they would like to start driving then you may want to buy driving lessons as a birthday or Christmas gift.  This would seem like the perfect gift and your child will probably be delighted.  However, this delight could turn to despair after they have passed their driving test and start looking for car insurance.  The problem is that cheap car insurance for 17 year olds can be hard to come by.  In fact, it is not unheard of for teenagers to be paying around £2,000 or more for their annual car insurance premium.  So what can you do about this?

What You Can Do About It

There are a number of things that can be done to help find cheaper car insurance for 17 year olds such as thinking about the car that your teenager will be driving.  If you are buying them a car then you should ensure that it is a safe car and one that will not cost a lot to insure.  That means that it should be a car with a small engine and preferably a used car.  Cars with big engines cost more to insure and obviously a brand new car will incur higher insurance payments as well.

Why Is Car Insurance So Expensive for 17 year Olds

There are a number of reasons why car insurance companies charge more for insuring young drivers.  In their world, risk is everything and they see young drivers who have little or no experience on the roads as a risky prospect.  Without experience, they are more likely to be involved in an accident.  Plus, young drivers are said to be more reckless.  In fact of all the deaths on the roads, young drivers are involved in a large majority so it is no wonder that insurance companies are cautious about offering insurance at cheap rates.

Is There Anything Else You Can Do?

Believe it or not, there is a lot that you can do to get cheaper car insurance for your teenage son or daughter.  While choosing the right car is important, it is also possible to add your child to your own policy as a named driver for a few years instead of getting them their own policy.  This will definitely cost less than a separate insurance policy and it means they can try and build up their driving experience this way before deciding to get their own policy.  Then it should be cheaper for them when they want to get their own insurance as they will be a few years older and will also have a few years experience driving.
