I Saved a Fortune on Car Insurance

One of expenses that always gets me by surprise is my car insurance policy. The time arrives each year when I need to pay this money and I am not ready for it. This means that I have to go searching through my finances to free up money to pay it. It also means that I do not have time to search my options so end up choosing the same insurer every time. This situation is far from ideal so this year I decided to do things differently. I began preparing for my insurance renewal a month before it was due. This made a huge difference to me because it meant that I was able to get cheap car insurance – I ended up saving a lot of money. Here are some of the things I learnt from this experience.

• Searching for car insurance one month before I actually needed to renew turned out to be a great idea. I would highly recommend this to other people because it does away with the need to rush around at the last minute. I just spent a few evenings hunting on the internet and I had no problem finding lots of insurers who were offering a better deal than my current insurer. Then it was just a matter of choosing the one that was most appropriate.
• I did not find out about price comparison websites until relatively late into my search. This is a shame because it could have save me a lot of time and energy. The good thing about these sites is that you can compare the quotes of hundreds of different insurers in a very short time period – a few seconds. The one thing I did notice though was that different comparison websites provided different recommendation. It is probably best to use a couple of these sites to insure that you are not getting biased information.
• It is important to be careful when comparing the different quotes to insure that you are matching like with like. Some of the insurance quotes seemed to be cheaper at first look but when I actually dug a little deeper I found that they were offering less.
• There are a lot of these insurance policies that are cheap, but then the insurer will try to manipulate you into agreeing to lots of extras. By the time you have finished you are actually paying for more than the other policies. I think you need to be really careful to avoid these extras, because the brokers are so skilled at talking people into them.
• One thing that I never realized before was how I could bring the cost of my insurance down by agreeing to a millage limit. The funny thing is that this millage limit is actually a lot more than I normally drive anyway. This means that I could have been benefiting from this price reduction before but had not even considered it.
